Last time I checked the Sunfire was getting about 31, compared to its EPA estimate of about 24. I drive as economically as practically possible. I haven't been able to top off the tank for the past few months so I don't know what I've been getting recently.

Quite the opposite, the Mercedes badge will increase the perception of the van as high quality, a cut above the others in its class. Maybe not to van shoppers, but probably to luxury car shoppers who wouldn't take a close look at the van anyway.

I would've kept the Merkur Scorpio badged a Ford, and brought it over in '85 instead of introducing the Taurus. Of course then we would've ended up with an ever uglier third-generation model.

I can't offer any advice as far as the best drivetrain. Whatever you put in, I would recommend a device to monitor your fuel economy like a ScanGuage or a vacuum gauge if you wanna keep it classic. It'd be a heck of a job to aero-mod. Fender skirts and full, smooth undercarriage covering would be the best compromise between discreet and effective.
