These were as beefy as they got as long as I've been alive. After those the 1987-1991 looked they they ran into a wall, the 1992-1996's looked like the Dodge Phoenix and 1997-2003s look like worn soap, etc; so in my mind these always were the last gasps of ruggedness before they went soft. Not that I'd say no a 1970's Hi-Boy, I'm just too young for them to have been around much.

1980-86 Ford F-Series. They actually looked beefy without looking bloated like the current Super Duty. 1984-1990 Bronco II. The closest the Big 3 ever got to a legitimate Wrangler competitor and with the Eddie Bauer package, the interiors weren't too bad.

In Alaska, Arkansas, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina and South Dakota you can do whatever you want. I'm guessing if you lived in the right state that only required emissions testing in certain counties or didn't inspect collector vehicles you could get away with it.

It looks like federal standard 595 color FS 14260, the same one they use on Forest Service trucks. That would be my guess.
