Trip went really well. Five guys biking for at least 4 hours a day for 6 days, and no serious injuries. Can't ask for much more than that. Went whitewater rafting on the Colorado as well. I'll get some pics up here once my friend sends them to me. Oh, and we had a white Suburban pretty much exactly like this one It impressed my friends for sure - it had impressive fuel economy considering we were climbing over the Rockies with five guys and a back end completely full of luggage and bikes. I-70 west of Denver is completely insane. I've never seen anything like that in a major highway. You really need to engine brake on the way down to avoid burning your brakes. 6-7% grades meant that even with the Suburban in 3rd gear (of 6) revving at 3-4k, no throttle and even periodic braking was required to keep it around 60-70 mph. One interesting thing is that the car seemed to realize what I was trying to do with the engine braking - it left all 8 cylinders on when I was doing that, but would go down to 4 when cruising gently.

Remember, there is such a thing as "Socially Liberal and Financially Conservative". It's the phrase that seems to get you the most votes in Ontario politics.

This weekend I'll be heading out to the mountain biking mecca Moab, Utah. Driving to Detroit, flying from there to Denver, then doing this in a rental "Premium SUV" (Suburban or Expedition EL) Spending a week biking and whitewater rafting there in Moab, then one day in Fruita, CO on the way back to Denver.

I'd love to see this as a rally. map The northern of the two long straight sections (Powerline) is moderately hilly and gravel. The southern section (Jerseyville) is paved but has very sudden rolling hills. I think cars going 120+ km/h on those hills would definately leave the ground. The eastern part of the course is my favourite, I'd love to be there as the cars wind through historic Mineral Springs village, it's insanely twisty. The section of Sulphur Springs just north of Mineral Springs is very steep with a very tight corner at the top - the signs recommend taking it at 10 km/h. The western bit would be very fast with long sweeping corners.

35 minutes for 10 miles? Is that Phoenix? Must be terrible traffic...

For me I found it to be more of a drain on my sleep than anything else. I really didn't allow my personal life to be crushed by my job. Just showed up everyday a little more tired until the weekend recharge.

Right now it is 45 km, about 43 km of that being on the 401. Traffic slows it down, but it's still not that bad. 35-50 mins each way depending on traffic. That length of commute doesn't bother me at all. My worst commute was back after first year University, when I was living at home in Brantford and commuting to eastern Mississauga. Bad traffic both ways, pretty much all the time. Anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on how bad the jam was that day. I dealt with that through the knowledge that it was not forever - just for the summer, and it was a really good opportunity for me.

My average consumption is usually right around this number, including city and crawling through highway traffic jams. 23 mpg = 10.2 L/100km OUCH This is why I will never buy a V8.

I think it might be worth it for Mercedes to restore it and see what they can do for a record... Would be good publicity!
