Name an Asian company that has 7 brands in the US. Toyota has 3, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai each have 2. GM alone has almost as many nameplates as Japan and Korea combined. I think paring GM down, one way or another would help the company be more efficient and in a better position to fight the imports. *Edit: So I forgot Mitsu, Suzuki and Subie, they're insignificant anyways.

Floor shifters are "sportier" although if that were true they would be attached to a manual transmission. But since its an automatic, and it'll be driven by rappers and morons, a column shifter makes more sense. Anytime you can shift from "P" to "R" without taking your hands off the wheel is good, it means the morons wont have to take their hands off the wheels.

No, design matters more than mass. Design allows a driver to not take all the forces of the impact, design allows the driver to not be impaled by the steering wheel or thrown through the windshield. Mass helps the car itself, but it doesn't matter if your car is drivable after the accident if your head has been torn off and is twenty feet away from your body. In a head-on collision, I would much rather be in the least safe car from the 90's than in the safest car from the 50's, modern seatbelts, airbags, crumple zones, non-stabbing steering columns, it isn't even close to being a tough choice.

They've used the in-car satellite thing on Pimp My Ride, the system seems like an awesome idea, especially if they offer individual monitors and dual receivers so each of the kiddies on the second row can watch whatever.
